Anyoung my dear friends. Welcome back to A K-Addict’s talk. Its been a while since I have written last . But this year I’ll make sure to post regular blog posts. So First of all, I want to wish all of you a very happy ,healthy , prosperous and K-drama loaded new year. But today on the new year’s eve, I want to write on something unrelated to the topic. Its rather a social topic which I think must be talked and discussed about. Its high time. Its about menstrual taboo and hygiene. It’s the crucial time we should aware both women and men and make them talk about it openly rather than treating it as a taboo.
SO FIRST OF ALL…. WHATS MENSTRUATION? WHY A WOMAN GOES THROUGH IT?
Without talking in scientific terms, I’d like to explain it in simple language so that everyone can get it. Ok So its like a natural process every woman goes through every month when she is not pregnant. During these 3 to 4 days, the woman goes through certain hormonal changes and bleeds. Its as natural as breathing. That’s not at all a big deal . I think it is a symbol of power which shows what a woman is capable of doing. A woman is capable of bringing another life into this world .
THE SEX EDUCATION:
I think every girl must be taught about this process that she is probably going to encounter in few years beforehand so that she won’t be baffled in the first time. There are many girls who think that they are having some terminating “disease” and they don’t talk about it to their mothers fearing they will be sad.
Some think that they are hurt somewhere and will be alright with putting on a band aid on it. Some think that they are suffering from blood cancer or something. And they don’t talk about it with anyone until and unless they get found out by someone else. So it’s the duty of the elders to educate them before hand openly, teach them the use of sanitary napkins rather than keeping them in darkness and just ignoring their curiosity.
In school level also the discussion should be open and frank. If the teachers themselves would shy away they can never expect students to act properly. May be this is why while teaching, many male students stay ignorant and don’t get the idea of the situation and later breed a wrong conception.
THE TABOO:
There are many taboos in this world which a girl comes across while experiencing these 3 to 4 days. One of them is NOT GOING TO THE TEMPLE or NOT ENTERING ANY HOLY PLACES because women are considered “impure” then. I mean when a criminal ,who is a murderer, rapist, thief, has done all sorts of bad things, when he can enter the temple and you consider him as pure. And a woman cant enter the temple just because she is bleeding. That’s the mindset of the so called ‘modern India’.
Another one is you CANT TOUCH PICKLE during these days. If you do, the pickles won’t be consumed anymore and will be thrown. Women don’t turn into zombies or anything while in their periods that they will destroy your pickles.
In some of the countries, women are left in a cattle shed for all those days without anyone’s contact and they are not allowed to take showers. It is believed that if they take shower while they are in their cycles, their fertility will be decreased. Can you imagine what a woman would be going through while she remains there. Withing the unhygienic place where cattles are living, she is sitting their without any absorbant without any showers. This is a health hazard for both the women as well as the cattles.
Another taboo is that when you discover that you have your periods, you cant touch anything or anybody and directly go and take shower no matter what the time of day it is. Isn’t it sick?? Simply illogical..
